Toll Violations
Is a toll violation a police-issued ticket?
No, the police do not issue toll violation tickets.
However, unpaid tolls are legally required to be paid. Under Virginia law, if a driver travels on a toll road without paying, they may face significant fines. In certain cases, this can also lead to the suspension of vehicle registration through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. These consequences apply to both Virginia residents and out-of-state drivers.
Why did I get a statement if I have E-ZPass®?
There are several reasons your toll charges may not have processed through your E-ZPass account:
- License plate not registered
- Insufficient funds
- Transponder not mounted correctly
- Vehicle compatibility issues
- Account-related problems
For more details, please review our dispute forms.
Why was my license plate photographed?
Your vehicle was recorded traveling on Pocahontas Parkway without payment. Our system uses cameras to capture an image of the vehicle at the date and time of travel to verify the toll transaction.
What if I wasn’t the driver?
Our system sends notices to the registered owner listed with the DMV, as that individual is legally responsible for any tolls incurred by the vehicle, regardless of who was driving.
What if my vehicle/license plate was stolen?
If your vehicle or license plate was stolen at the time of travel, please attach a copy of the official police report when filing a dispute. This documentation helps us properly review and resolve any related toll transactions.
Please note: the police report must be filed before the violation date. If it was filed afterward, you may still be held liable for the toll notice.
What if the vehicle owner is deceased?
Please attach a copy of the death certificate to the dispute form. This documentation ensures we can accurately review and resolve any related toll transactions.
Note: If violations occurred after the date of death, responsibility falls to the estate.
Why are charges higher than expected?
Unpaid tolls can result in administrative fees and penalties ranging from $12.50 to $600 per violation, depending on how long the toll remains unpaid and whether the matter escalates to collections or court. These charges cover processing and are authorized under Virginia law.
To avoid additional fees, pay missed tolls promptly and keep your DMV registration and address information up to date to ensure proper billing and communication.
