E-ZPass® FAQ
What is E-ZPass®?
An E-ZPass® is a transponder that mounts to your vehicle’s windshield. With it in place, you can drive through E-ZPass® toll plazas without stopping to pay at a cash lane. The system automatically deducts the toll from your prepaid account.
It’s important to ensure your vehicle’s license plate is correctly linked to your E-ZPass® account to avoid billing issues.
What's the advantage of E-ZPass®?
With E-ZPass®, there’s no need to scramble for loose change or cash, no hassle of opening your window in bad weather, and no waiting in lines at the toll plaza. You’ll enjoy seamless access to non-stop, open toll lanes on Pocahontas Parkway. Plus, installation is quick and easy—no tools required.
How do I get an E-ZPass®?
You can get an E-ZPass® in Virginia with or without a credit card.
Sign up online at ezpassva.com with a credit card for automatic payments.
Without a credit card, buy a prepaid E-ZPass® On-the-Go kit at DMV or retail stores, then register it online or by phone. Reload with cash, debit, or a reload card.
Will it work on other toll roads?
Yes, E-ZPass® works on all Virginia toll roads and across a 17-state network, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. It’s a convenient way to pay tolls with one account and transponder—perfect for frequent travelers.
What happens if I don't have enough money in my E-ZPass® account?
If your E-ZPass® transponder isn’t working, check your account at ezpassva.com or call 1-877-762-7824. You may need a replacement or to update your payment info.
To avoid violations, use the “Missed a Toll” option on the Pocahontas Parkway website or contact customer service with your license plate details.
Who operates E-ZPass®?
In Virginia, the E-ZPass program is operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
What if my E-ZPass is broken or deactivated?
If your E-ZPass® transponder is broken or has been deactivated, you should take action as soon as possible to avoid missed tolls or violations.
First, check your account online at ezpassva.com or call 1-877-762-7824 to confirm the status of your transponder. If it’s broken, you can request a replacement—usually free if the device is still under warranty. If it’s deactivated due to inactivity or account issues, you may need to relink it to your account or update your payment information.
In the meantime, you can still pay tolls manually using the “Missed a Toll” option on the Pocahontas Parkway website or by contacting customer service. Be sure to have your license plate number and state of registration ready.
