Staying Safe on the Roads: A Winter Weather Message from Pocahontas Parkway

Multiple snow plows lined up on Pocahontas Parkway, staged and ready for incoming winter weather.

This past week, Central Virginia faced its first major winter storm of 2026, bringing a tough mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, bitterly cold temperatures, and widespread ice throughout the region. Starting Saturday, January 24, snow began falling before shifting into sleet and eventually freezing rain through Sunday—making travel difficult across Richmond and neighboring counties. Even after the precipitation ended, icy roads lingered, prompting many school districts to close for safety.

State and local agencies stressed how serious this storm was, especially with significant ice accumulation, several days of below-freezing temperatures, and the potential for power outages and delays in road treatment. Officials urged everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary so crews could do their work as safely and efficiently as possible.

At Pocahontas Parkway, keeping you safe is at the heart of what we do—during major storms like this one and every day of the year.

Our Commitment During Severe Winter Weather

As the storm coated Central Virginia in layers of snow and ice, transportation teams across the region—including our partners at VDOT—worked around the clock to pretreat, plow, and deice affected roadways. These efforts help ensure that major routes like Pocahontas Parkway remain as safe and passable as conditions allow. Even with brine applied in advance, lingering freezing rain meant some areas remained hazardous for 24–48 hours after the storm.

Throughout events like this, we stay in continuous coordination with transportation and emergency agencies. Our crews monitor road conditions closely, respond as icing forms, and pay special attention to bridges, ramps, and elevated surfaces, which freeze faster than regular pavement.

Safe Winter Driving Tips for Parkway Travelers

Even with dedicated crews on the job, winter storms can be unpredictable. As we move through the colder months, here are a few friendly reminders to help keep you safe when you need to be on the road:

1. Travel Only If Necessary

When winter weather is in the forecast, staying home when you can isn’t just safer—it also helps road crews clear and treat highways more effectively.

2. Slow Down and Increase Following Distance

Ice can be nearly impossible to see, especially on bridges and overpasses. Even treated roads can refreeze overnight when temperatures dip into the teens or single digits.

3. Give Road Crews Room to Work

Snowplows and de‑icing trucks move slowly for a reason. Keeping a safe distance allows them to work and keeps everyone safer.

4. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

It’s always a good idea to travel with basics like blankets, snacks, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone—especially when storms may bring power outages or extended delays.

5. Check Road Conditions Before You Go

Before driving, take a moment to check 511 Virginia or other trusted traffic sources for the latest updates.

Moving Forward Together

Even with the difficult mix of snow, sleet, ice, and frigid temperatures, we’re grateful for the incredible teamwork shown across the region. Road crews, emergency responders, and community members all played a part in keeping Central Virginia safe. We appreciate everyone who stayed off the roads when asked and who took extra care when travel couldn’t be avoided.

As winter continues, Pocahontas Parkway remains committed to keeping our roadway safe, reliable, and ready when you need it. We encourage all drivers to stay alert to changing weather conditions and to always make safety the top priority.

Thank you for doing your part—and please continue to travel with care.
